One of my favorite ways to prepare for the holiday season is to read some good Christmas books. If you know me, you know that I read every night, and during the day too on the weekends. At this busy time of year, it seems a special treat to take the time to slow down and crack open the pages of some well loved stories. Every year I read Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, which is what I'm currently reading. It's nice because it's a very short story and easy to read. I love watching the George C. Scott film version too, which stays very close to the text.
Here are some others that I've enjoyed reading over the years:
The Handmaid and the Carpenter by Elizabeth Berg. It tells the Christmas story from Mary and Joseph's perspectives. Thought-provoking and an easy read.
Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. This one made me laugh out loud and think about going to the Bahamas for Christmas.
The Shepherd, The Angel, And Walter the Christmas Miracle Dog by Dave Barry. True to form, Barry induces guffaws and belly laughs through this sweet and poignant tale.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. Imogen Herdman. Enough said.
Shepherds Abiding by Jan Karon. This is the eighth book in the Mitford series. Father Tim finds the reason for the season.
Do you have Christmas books that make it into your repertoire each year? I'm always looking for more. Post for me and others to see!
In this year my dear new daughter...is a restful period of thanks for all we have been given and these wonderful new gifts of family and life we are just beginning. I can never be as well read as you! Remember I am a Gamecock and we rarely know how to read....but we do know the passion of love. This Christmas for our family - let us remember the wonderful gifts we have been given and just how much we owe for these wonderful gifts in life....so, maybe we don't give our ATM cards to everyone - but, let's remember those that do not beg for profit or just self interest..but those young kids that simply want a fair shake and to have a decent meal...who have no books and little hope. So my dear new daughter....who I respect and love so much...let's keep at least one dime or more on every dollar we spend on family for a gift to kids...and box up books and fun gifts for kids we don't know .....that want and need love. So when you get home with the rest of your new expanded family, let's take those boxes of gifts and love to kids with hope but without foundations or expectations... and build their dreams and hopes knowing that with just a little help from us...and others...their life can be better and different. Love you and Matt...take care and prepare your wonderful husband for the First Annual Great Christmas Chilli Pepper Cook-Off! I am gunning for him!!!! The first annual Hot Chilli Pepper Cook Off may well be televised by ESPN...so bow ties are in order! Tell him to be there or be square! This may be the first SEC, ACC conference game Wake Forest may win!!!! The burden on Matt is great...but he will be in our prayers! And I will be investing in Nexium just for him!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to let you know how proud I am of you and Matt....on your new adventure and hanging in there with all the regulatory challenge of life!
